Interview Tips

Awhile back I wrote about Job Hunting Like A Boss and I thought it would be a good idea to share some tips on what to do once you land an interview. I am not a career advice professional, however, I have been to many interviews in my life and gotten the job nearly every time.

The two times I did not get the job (or at least a call back):
1. I applied for a job at an electronics store and the other person being interviewed used to work for the company so I’m pretty sure they picked him over me.
2. I applied for a department store and there were many, many, many applicants and I didn’t have any retail experience at that time.

Other than those two times, I have either gotten an offer or was hired. I also used to be a Retail Store Manager so I have been on the other side – in regards to interviewing and hiring.

Before the interview
Learn about the company and the position: A quick google search can usually get you all the information you need to find out more about the company and the position that you are applying for. You can also learn more by searching LinkedIn as well. It’s nice to walk into an interview knowing a bit about the company – you can impress people with this knowledge if it comes up. It is also important to know at least a little about the position and what the average pay is.

Dress the part: After you learn a bit more about the company and the position decide what professional outfit to wear.

During the interview
Be professional: Even in a more relaxed setting is important to remain professional. Sometimes the interviewer may be a little more laid back. Go with the flow, however, remain professional at the same time.

After the interview
Followup: If you are not offered the position at the interview be sure to followup in a few days to see if you are chosen as one of the candidates. Don’t be rude or obnoxious on the phone/in the email. Just simply say you are following up on your interview and wanted to know what the hiring managers thoughts were after your interview.

Life, Life

Last weekend was extremely productive for me. I worked on my Avon business, cleaned and purged a bunch of items in my home and was able to write and schedule a bunch of blog posts. I feel so extremely proud of everything that I was able to accomplish. I am trying to get as many things done this summer as I possibly can because once school starts back up I know I will have to adjust my schedule significantly to make time for homework, papers, projects and so on. I’m glad that I have had this time to work on things that have been lingering on my to-do list forever.

I have a lot of fun things that I have on my summer to-do list which includes pursuing things that I am passionate about. I won’t go into any details at the moment but I will for sure share it with y’all as I get things done so come back and visit and make sure you subscribe so you know when a new post is published!

As I have mentioned before, life has been pretty hectic and I am slowly feeling all the anger, hurt, frustration and confusion slowly calming down. With that being said, I realize I have been having a sort of quarterlife crisis. I know what I want to do with my life – the main thing seems to be helping people. In what capacity? I think that is wherein the issue lies. I have been doing a lot of praying and meditating on this lately because I feel like I need guidance.

Show me where to go and what to do Universe!!

I am nowhere in the place I would like to be/think I should be at my current age but I am willing to take any extra steps necessary to get there. I think this year (2016 and this new year of my life) is really a time for growth and exploration for me. I am out here testing the waters and really listening to my inner voice. Of course you are all welcome to join me on this journey and if I have any epiphanies I will be sure to share it!

I recently watched Laura from iheartplanners youtube video How to Find Your “Thing” and I really enjoyed it because as a blogger and entrepreneur I am always thinking about what my “thing” is – unfortunately, I tend to always have a bunch of “things” that I want to pursue. I like how she shared how she got to where she was and I hope to get there one day as well.

Watch the video below:

I hope you enjoyed the video as much as I did!

Blog Life

So as I mentioned above, I was able to get a lot of blogging tasks done last weekend. I am really proud of myself and so happy that it didn’t feel like “work” as much as play. Sometimes all the things that come with being a blogger can get you down or feel tedious but I really enjoyed myself and hope that I have many more days, months and years of this type of enjoyment and motivation when it comes to blogging.

Making Well-Being a Priority at Work

Work Relationships

Most adults spend a majority of their time at their job. Because our time spent there makes a huge impact on our lives, people should think about making well-being a priority at work. Often times we spend so much time there that we sometimes end up with a “work family” of sorts. Since we spend so much time with the people we work with it is important that we take care of and look out for each other when we can.

Even though the dynamic may be different because it is the work environment, people often take care of each other in some sort of way. If you have close relationships with the people that you work with you, may know at least the basic information about them. Others you may have more personal relationships with. Either way you know a little about them and can use that to build a positive work relationship.

Managing With Integrity

When it comes to upper management, things often change because managers are supposed to manage, delegate and guide others. However, staying too removed from the people that they work with can often hurt not only work relationships but also the work environment in general.

By forming (healthy and appropriate) relationships with their employees; managers can help their employees to do better which will in turn make their jobs easier and more enjoyable as well. Did you know that in many large corporations when there seems to be a lot of problems the first person that gets in trouble is the manager if it looks like they are not working well with others? If that doesn’t encourage you to work better with others, I don’t know what will.

Praise and Encouragement

It is extremely important for people that are in charge to encourage and praise their employees when they are doing well. When someone is praised for their “good work” or “dedication” it often makes them not only feel better about themselves but can also inspire them to continue to do great work.

When someone feels like their hard work has paid off and they get complimented for it, it can positively effect their well-being as well. As a manager, the health and well-being of your employees should be just as important as them turning in that assignment by the deadline. Healthier employees often equates to happier and harder working employees. If they don’t feel balanced in all aspects of their life it can really effect their performance.

The importance of making well-being a priority at work. Tips for upper management from an ex Retail Store Manager

Making Well-Being a Priority at Work

As the person in charge who mentors and guides their employees, making well-being a priority at work can do things like:
– increase morale
– boost employees self-esteem
– be a catalyst for positive change in the work place

Whether you are giving out compliments or holding health and wellness seminars – it is important to help your employees live better. If people feel good on the inside it reflects to the outside and in everything that they do – which includes their work.

My Personal Experience in Retail Management

Retail work is not for everyone. There are cranky and crazy customers. Often long hours and not enough pay. A lot of the time this equates to high turn-over. As a Retail Store Manager I always took it upon myself to praise and encourage my sales girls. Whether I ran a sales contest with prizes or made it a priority to always say a simple “thank you” at the end of their shift – I tried to treat all of the employees like they were just as important as my management team was.

There were several times where employees would later come to me and say “thank you” in return for encouraging them and treating them like human beings. I genuinely cared about how they were doing and where they were going – from their education to their career. You can form relationships with people and still hold your position when it comes to your job. Be one of the positive people in their experiences during the week.

Ways to Recognize Employees for Their Accomplishments

By recognizing employees for their accomplishments you can make often make them feel better overall. If you know that they are into competitions you can set a production or sales goal and reward the top performers – you can even reward everyone else just for their effort.

Some of the ways that you can recognize employees for their accomplishments:
1. Create a spreadsheet, poster or board that tracks your top performers: Based on my experience, this can create some healthy competition between employees and often makes everyone feel great about what they are able to accomplish while they are in the zone. You can change what the goal is every week, month, quarter and so on and even the activity because in general some people are better at certain things overall so you want to make it fair as well.
2. Recognize them during team meetings or events: If you have a small team you can have a prize, reward or certificate for everyone and point out what their best assets are. If you have a larger team you can give out bigger rewards but still give out maybe a treat bag or something small to the other members of your team.
3. Tell them to their face: When someone is going above and beyond for a long time they may be discouraged if it goes unnoticed. Give them a boost of confidence by pulling them to the side and saying “thank you.”
4. Encourage them while on the job: If you have a few employees around you do a pow-wow and point out each persons strengths. You can say something like “Jenna is really great at analyzing our XYZ reports; feel free to ask her if you want some tips.” This works well because you are pointing out the strengths of someone and encouraging others to look to them if they want some tips (which often boosts peoples self-esteem because they feel like they are the person to talk to.) Also, colleagues that are at about the same level in regards to job duties and responsibilities are more likely to ask each other questions and when they do you want them to go to the right person for certain questions.

Those are just some of the ways that I have recognized employees for their accomplishments – what are some of the ways that you have recognized your employees in the past? How have you made others feel better in the work place? How have you made well-being a priority at work? Let me know in the comments or give me a holler on Twitter.

2015: A Year In Review

In replace of Flashback Friday’s (where I normally do a round-up of some of my favorite things from the week) I decided to do a review of the past year as we bring in 2016.

Flashback Fridays Year In Review 2015 Hertaintedlips

January
+ Celebrated the new year with family and friends in Georgia. It was a nice start to the new year especially since the end of 2014 was a bit rough for me.
+ Began planning the re-launch of this website.

February
+ Started getting serious about making personal, professional and blogging goals.
+ Introduced Flashback Friday’s to the blog. This was extremely fun to do and I wish I had stuck with it throughout the year but a lot of personal things were going on during the middle of the year so this got put on the back burner for awhile.

March
+ I was Job Hunting Like A Boss
+ Started doing the tasks required to meet my blogging goals.
+ Participated in NaBloPoMo for the first time. The topic for the month was “News.” Take a look at my NaBloPoMo Posts. I also cross-posted one of my posts on BlogHer. You can check that out here: Twitter As A News Source

April
+ All of my job hunting paid off – interviews and job offers started rolling in and I eventually was able to get a job. I started working part time and I really enjoyed this change in my life.
+ Not only did I start working again, I also started selling AVON again.

May
+ This was a great month – I was able to see a handful of important people in my life graduate from college. Always great to celebrate others accomplishments with them.

June
+ This summer was humid and HOT. Probably the hottest summer I have ever remembered experiencing in Hawaii. It was ridiculous. I was having a lot of health problems and did end up having a small procedure done because of it. Recovery was super quick but I kept having different health issues and getting sick. The humidity and vog did not help at all. I was having sinus issues and horrible headaches but as the weather slowly cooled down I started feeling better.

July
+ My birthday month! I had a really great birthday dinner with my family – nothing too fancy. I did attend a couple of events with family and/or friends and that was really nice as well. Had a great time at the water park – perfect for cooling off during the hot summer heat.

August
+ After a loooooooooong break from working on my Bachelor’s Degree I finally went back to school! It took awhile to adjust to being a student – I forgot how much time it takes to read, study and do homework. I slowly but surely was able to get on track. The best thing I did as a student was making sure that I put everything on my calendar and scheduled time for studying/homework during the week.

September
+ Another change I made was my hair. I decided to try Thermal Straightening again as the hot and humid months really made my curly hair misbehave and I was just ready for a change.

October
+ As rough as this year was on me spiritually and mentally I suppose it was a year of changes. In October I started working out again – even got back into the gym! Started with 1-2 times a week and worked my way up to 3+ depending on the week.
+ After a hiatus from blogging I decided to start working towards my blogging goals again because I missed blogging so much but with school I had to figure out how to fit it back into my schedule. Once I did, things got better and I started working with the drafts that had been sitting there waiting for me.

November
+ I ended up with a cold that turned into Bronchitis. What a great way to start the month!
+ Thanksgiving was really great and I enjoyed the time I spent with my family.

December
+ I participated in an Instagram Challenge (I didn’t post everyday but I was able to do most days.
+ I was a Featured Blogger at Blogelina.
+ I made it through the year and my first semester back to school.

How was your year? Let me know in the comments.

Flashback Fridays: Episode 8

image

Happy Friday!! Another week bites the dust. I hope it was a wonderful week for y’all and that you had a Happy Easter holiday. I had a wonderful time with family and friends. We had baskets and an egg hunt for the kids which is always exciting. We ate breakfast and lunch together as well as munched on random goodies – cupcakes and hot cross buns – to name a few. It was so nice to get together with everyone and enjoy each other’s company.

Work Life
In other exciting news… I got a job!! I had an interview last weekend and started training this week. I am so excited and thank you to everyone that sent me encouraging messages as I was job hunting. I appreciate it and if you are still looking for something I wish you the best of luck!

Of course when you get a job a bunch of other places contact you with offers and interviews so this week I have been swamped with calls and emails. That makes me feel so wanted and it is a good reminder that patience will eventually pay off. It gave me an extra bit of confidence.

I started training for the job this week and I am enjoying myself so far. It is a lot of information to learn but I am always up for a challenge. It is related to my field of study and I am able to use my computer and customer service skills so I don’t feel as overwhelmed as someone that would have came with no experience at all.

Around the web
+ My friend Trent published his first blog post. It is a reflection on love – from a male point-of-view so something different than you would normally find on the interwebs.
+ If you’re a fashion lover I am sure you would love to know How To Wear Spring Trends – pretty floral’s and bright purses are just the beginning.

Anything exciting happen in your life this week?
